Special Programme for Tai O Dragon Boat Water Parade

The Tai O Dragon Boat Water Parade is an important traditional festival in Tai O with a history of over 100 years. On the 4th and 5th day of the fifth lunar month every year, three fishermen's associations in Tai O, namely Pa Teng Hong, Sin Yu Hong and Hap Sim Tong, organise the dragon boat parade. Deity statues are put on the sacred sampans towed by the dragon boats to parade along the waterways of Tai O, giving offerings to appease the wandering spirits along the way, and blessings for the well-being and peace of the residents on the land and water. The Tai O Dragon Boat Parade was inscribed onto the third national list of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in 2011.

A Talk on the "Tai O Dragon Boat Water Parade and Intangible Cultural Heritage" will be held to introduce its history, social significance and cultural inheritance. Besides, a Field Visit to the Tai O Dragon Boat Water Parade will be held subsequently on the day of the Dragon Boat Festival, with free shuttle bus services arranged for participants to Tai O. Participants can experience this festive event in the stilt houses, together with the residents.

The programme is also one of the activities in the Chinese Culture Promotion Series. The LCSD has long been promoting Chinese history and culture through organising an array of programmes and activities to enable the public to learn more about the broad and profound Chinese culture.
