Qilin (a Chinese unicorn) is an auspicious animal. Local communities celebrate weddings, festivals, deities' birthdays and other celebrations with qilin dances. The 'Paper Crafting Technique' is inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Hong Kong, where artisans use simple materials to create various items of social and cultural significance. The qilin heads displayed in this exhibition were crafted by students of the 'Course on Hong Kong Traditional Paper Crafting Arts Series 2: Crafting Workshop for Qilin of Punti Wai Tau'. This exhibition specifically highlights the Punti Wai Tau qilin crafting technique, enhancing the public's understanding of Punti Wai Tau qilin crafting and its connection to traditional festivals. At the same time, the students' creativity showcases the transmission and innovation of the ICH.

As one of the 'Community-driven Projects 2022' under the ICH Funding Scheme, the course is presented by the Hong Kong Traditional Paper Crafting Arts Union and instructed by Master Mo Cheuk-kei, Kenneth. It aims at sowing the seeds for nurturing a new generation of paper crafters.

The exhibition is also one of the activities in the Chinese Culture Promotion Series. The LCSD has long been promoting Chinese history and culture through organising an array of programmes and activities to enable the public to learn more about the broad and profound Chinese culture.
