"Design District Hong Kong" — "Creative Journey · Infinite Discovery"

"Design District Hong Kong" (#ddHK) is a creative tourism project organised by the Tourism Commission. The project launches the new edition with the new theme "Creative Journey · Infinite Discovery". The discovering journey to Tsuen Wan combines local culture, heritage and natural landscape with creative elements, and encourages the tourist to appreciate the unique charm of the community.

 

To complement the "Creative Journey · Infinite Discovery" programme, the art installations are set up at the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Centre. A series of public programmes and special guided tour service will be provided in the ICH Centre to share the rich tapestry of Hakka culture and Hong Kong's ICH with the public.

Art Installations: "Woven Dreams: Prayers of Modernity"

The public art installations are displayed in the forecourt and the left and right lanes of the Sam Tung Uk Museum, has adorned the exterior walls of the Hakka walled village with a modern look, to connect the local ICH and art creation. Captivated by the "Caimen", the local knot designer Zoe Siu has combined the intricate weaving techniques of Hakka patterned band, one of the inscribed items of the ICH Inventory of Hong Kong and different auspicious motifs in the unique weaving artwork. The artist embraces the modern and traditional influence by intertwining the Hakka culture and customs, local ICH and wishes for a good life of people. Echoing both the architecture feature of the Sam Tung Uk and the "Lost and Sound Exhibition Series", the artwork enriches our visiting experience.

 

 

 

Public Programme: Flowery Band: Demonstration of Lantern Band Embroidery Technique

The weaving techniques of Hakka and Wai Tau patterned bands are very similar. Hakka and Wai Tau patterned bands are also used in everyday items, lantern bands with auspicious meaning are hung on the lanterns by the families with new-born sons during the lantern lighting ritual. In this demonstration, the artist of patterned band embroidery technique, Ms Lau Hoi-wai, will introduce the weaving techniques and the cultural connotations of the patterned bands and lantern bands. Participants may also have a hands-on experience with the patterned band weaving technique and learn about different auspicious motifs.

Workshop: Community Art Weaving Workshop

The diverse motifs of Hakka and Wai Tau patterned bands, combine with modern elements. In the workshop, the knot designer, Ms Zoe Siu, will introduce the patterned weaving technique and its cultural connotation. Participants may create handmade textiles band inspired by patterned bands as a souvenir of the journey.

Guided Tour Services: "Woven Dreams: Prayers of Modernity"

Apart from introducing the history and architecture of Sam Tung Uk and the exhibitions on display, the group and public guided tour service will go through the "Woven Dreams: Prayers of Modernity" art installations during the "#ddHK──Creative Journey · Infinite Discovery". It will guide the public to explore the Hakka culture and customs, Hong Kong's ICH, and the unique charm of Sam Tung Uk Museum from a different perspective.
