Theme

Patterned Band Weaving of the Wai Tau and Hakka Culture

Huichun in the Chinese Art and History

Artistry of Making the Hong Kong Cheongsam and the Clothing History

Introduction

Ms Gladys Ya-yin Chiu, an artist, learnt weaving techniques of patterned bands from local Wai Tau and Hakka women through the Caritas Lung Yeuk Tau Community Development Project. The activity will introduce the varieties of patterned bands, symbolic meanings of patterns and techniques of weaving. Participants can experience weaving while exploring the cultural and historical stories of the Wai Tau and Hakka communities that the patterned bands conveyed.

To look for blessings in a new year, every household posts up huichun (spring scrolls) on the eve of the new year. Dr Alex Yim Chi-sing, lecturer of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at CUHK, will talk about the cultural and artistic anecdotes of the art of creating huichun, and demonstrate different script styles such as regular script and clerical script. Participants may grasp the fundamental skills of applying Chinese calligraphy on huichun.

The cheongsam has male and female styles. The clansmen in the New Territories wear the cheongsam as a sign of seniority. The female style is also known as qipao. Hong Kong’s qipao has developed into a unique style due to the influence of Western fashion design. Dr Athena Choi, a specialist in qipao and image design, will accompany Master Fung Yau-choi to introduce the techniques for making qipao from design, measuring, to sewing, etc. The development of Chinese clothing and the relationship with the cheongsam will also be discussed.
