ICH Fun @ Sam Tung Uk

Located at the Sam Tung Uk Museum, the Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre was established by the Intangible Cultural Heritage Office (ICHO) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department as a display and resource centre. It aims to enhance the public's understanding and awareness of intangible cultural heritage through various educational and promotional activities, including exhibitions, lectures, seminars, ICH bearers' demonstrations and workshops.

An official opening of the Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre will be held at 3 pm on 18 June 2016. It will be followed immediately by the "ICH Fun @ Sam Tung Uk" fun fair. The activities would cover the rich intangible cultural heritage of Hong Kong with a focus on Hakka culture to highlight the history of Sam Tung Uk, which used to be a walled village for Hakka settlements.

The fun fair will feature demonstration booths and exciting game stalls, while on stage, there would be a variety of performances such as "singing dialogues" in the Hakka dialect, and a Hakka fashion show which adds trendy flair to traditional wear. Want to be a Cantonese Opera diva for a day? Come to the make-up and dress-up stall. Want to learn the secrets behind making a smooth, rich cup of "Hong Kong style milk tea"? Let the international "milk tea" champ teach you step by step. Curious about the making of a Hakka unicorn? See what the master craftsman does with paper and the simplest materials…… It will be a day full of eye-opening fun.

For those who are interested in knowing more about our local heritage, do visit our first ICH-themed exhibition on location, The Oral Legacies: Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong. It covers ten ICH items of Hong Kong on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China under the domains of performing arts, rituals, festive events, and traditional craftsmanship. They represent the ongoing efforts made by various local communities towards upholding their indigenous traditions.
