Singing Nanyin as We Go
A song art sung in the Cantonese vernacular, nanyin was a kind of popular entertainment for the people of Hong Kong. Today, it has become part of our intangible cultural heritage and was inscribed onto the first Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong.
The Intangible Cultural Heritage Office invited the troupe group "The Gong Strikes One" to tour Hong Kong's 18 districts and use nanyin to recount the history of local communities and to bring in-depth cultural insights.
New Territories
Tsuen Wan District (Live Streaming)
The extraordinary journey "Singing Nanyin as We Go" will come to its last stop – Tsuen Wan District. Previously named "Tsin Wan" (literally means a shallow bay), Tsuen Wan emerged from rural villages to become a cluster of textile factories and subsequently one of the first generation new towns in Hong Kong (covering Tsuen Wan, Kwai Chung and Tsing Yi). Today it has further developed into a transport hub and is well-reputed as the "City of Bridges". Despite these changes, there remain historical traces, including meaningful street names, the centuries-old Sam Tung Uk Museum, and The Mills bearing witness to the history of the textile industry, etc. in Tsuen Wan. Join us on this melodic journey to have a deeper understanding of the multi-faceted district of Tsuen Wan.
