Guo Nian: Exhibition of the Spring Festival

With the successful inscription of "Spring festival, social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of traditional new year" onto the UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2024, China Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum in Beijing held a nationwide thematic exhibition — "Guo Nian: Exhibition of the Spring Festival" displaying more than 120 intangible cultural heritage (ICH) items related to the Spring Festival (also known as Chinese New Year) and over 300 pieces of exhibits of national and provincial representative ICH items. Hong Kong ICH items such as unicorn dance, paper crafting technique of lantern, lantern lighting ritual and sek pun (basin feast) are also showcased in the exhibition.

The three themes of "farewell to the old and welcoming the new", "praying for blessings and good fortune", as well as "reunion and harmony" compose the axis of the exhibition. The exhibition connects the ICH items related to the Spring Festival in different regions across the country; incorporates the festival customs with local characteristics in various areas, and restores the living scenes of residents in various regions. Together with performances, the exhibition allows the audience to experience the feeling of celebrating the Spring Festival at their hometown.
