Muse Fest HK 2026 Special Series

Shenzhen-Hong Kong Dialogue X Hakka Walled Villages —
Hakka Architecture Guided Tour & Hehu Xinju 3D Model Workshop

Co-organised by:
Shenzhen Museum
Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage Office

Built during the Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty, Shenzhen’s Hehu Xinju is one of the largest Hakka walled premises discovered in China, which measures around 24,816 square metres. It embodies the architectural essence of Hakka walled village houses across Guangdong, and exemplifies the castle-style fortified constructions in the Shenzhen-Hong Kong region. Listed as a declared monument since 1981 and now serving as the Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Centre, Hong Kong’s Sam Tung Uk is a Hakka walled house spanning over two centuries which demonstrates the wisdom of building techniques and rural culture of traditional Hakka villages.

The programme "Shenzhen-Hong Kong Dialogue X Hakka Walled Villages ─ Hakka Architecture Guided Tour & Hehu Xinju 3D Model Workshop" will introduce participants to Shenzhen’s Hehu Xinju and Hong Kong’s Sam Tung Uk, illuminating the Hakka architecture and related ICH of both cities. During the workshop, participants will assemble a 3D model of Hehu Xinju, delving into its intricate architectural structure and exploring the enduring culture of Hakka communal living.
