Wandering around Sheung Shui Wai - Rice Cookie and Sweet Potato Cake Workshop and Guided Tour

Rice cookies and sweet potato cakes are traditional food in Hong Kong. Even today, many villagers in the New Territories still gather together to make rice cookies before the Chinese New Year to strengthen community ties, and they also make sweet potato cakes in the first lunar month to give to families that have welcomed newborn baby boy.

In this activity, Mr Liu Chiu-wa, a Sheung Shui indigenous resident, will take the participants to visit Liu Ying Lung Study Hall (Grade 1 Historic Building) and Liu Man Shek Tong Ancestral Hall (Declared Monument) in Sheung Shui Wai. He will also introduce the local customs of Sheung Shui Wai and its related intangible cultural heritage items, such as Spring and Autumn Ancestral Worship of Clans and Lantern Lighting Ritual. Through live demonstrations and explanations, participants will learn how to make rice cookies and sweet potato cakes. What’s more, participants can personally savor the taste of authentic local village foods.

Yue Wo Hop Kee, with over 50 years of history, will introduce and demonstrate the detailed procedures of preserved sausage making, as well as the development of local preserved meat factory. Legacy in a bowl — A Hands-on Vegetable Tea Making Experience and Guided Tour in Pok Fu Lam Village

Vegetable Tea is a festive dish cherished by the Hoi Luk Fung/ Hoklo community. During Chinese New Year, Hoi Luk Fung/ Hoklo families collectively prepare vegetable tea and share with their visiting friends and relatives. This communal activity serves as a tradition that strengthens community bonds and reinforces cultural identity. The word for “vegetable” sounds like "wealth" in the local dialect, symbolising wishes for prosperity.

In this activity, the Pok Fu Lam Village community group will guide participants through steps of making vegetable tea. Participants will have a chance to try making it themselves, savouring its unique flavour while sharing in the festive joy.
